Story Behind the Story

Author and disability/fairness advocate, Katharine Lee, wrote One More Chance / Otra Oportunidad, a bi-lingual children’s book illustrated by fifth graders, to help children learn not to be afraid of people who at first appear different. Deep inside, we aren’t really so different at all.

After becoming disabled and depending on a wheelchair to get around, Katharine noticed that people often seemed uncomfortable or unsure how to relate to her, and often ignored her completely.  Since children by nature are openhearted and open minded, if they can learn early on not to be afraid of differences, they might live richer lives, understanding that we all share a common humanity.

Katharine graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from the College of Santa Fe. Years later, she continues to be an active and grateful resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
